Clio Area Schools is proud to recognize three board members who earned awards from the Michigan Association of School Boards (MASB) in 2025 for their dedication to leadership development and student achievement. These honors reflect their commitment to continuous improvement and service to our students, staff, and community.
Denise Frappier earned the Level 3 Award of Distinction and the Level 4 Master Board Member Award. Lydia Heine received the Level 4 Master Board Member Award. Dawn Renkiewicz was honored with the Level 1 Certified Board Member Award and the Level 2 Award of Merit.
Awards are earned through MASB’s leadership training program, conference participation, years of service, and ongoing leadership activities. These hours are completed in addition to the time board members dedicate to meetings, events, and reviewing policies and materials. Last year, more than 1,800 school board members across Michigan participated in MASB training or professional development workshops.
“I want to take a moment to recognize Denise, Lydia, and Dawn for their hard work and dedication,” said Superintendent Lisa Taylor. “Earning this distinction shows just how committed you are to our students, staff, and community. Your passion and leadership make a real difference every day. Thank you for all that you do.”

Eric Doyle, a 1997 Honors Graduate of Clio High School, stands as one of the most accomplished and decorated student-athletes in Clio history. A three-sport standout, Doyle left his mark on the fields and courts of Mustang Athletics through leadership, elite performance, and a relentless drive for excellence.
In football ,Eric was a three-year starter at quarterback and two-time team captain. He earned Al-Conference honors all three seasons, capped by first Team All-Conference and All-State recognition during his senior year. Under his leadership, the Mustangs captured the 1996 Big Nine Conference Championship and earned a berth in the MHSAA State Playoffs.
On the basketball court, Doyle was a four-year starter at point guard and served as captain for three seasons. He was named All-Conference each year, with First Team Honors as a senior, and finished his career as Clio High School's all-time leader in assists. He helped the Mustangs to the 1997 Big Nine East Division Championship.
On the baseball diamond, Eric was a force. A three-year starter and two-time captain, he earned First team all-Conference and Class A All-State Honors in both his sophomore and senior seasons. As a senior, he was named a MHSBCA Dream Teamer, USA Today All-American, and Collegiate Baseball Magazine All-American, while also competing in the prestigious MHSBCA High School All-Star Game. Eric finished the year batting .597 which ranks amongst the top averages in MHSAA history. He finished as the runner-up for Michigan's Mr. Baseball in 1997 and continued his baseball career at Michigan State University.
Following his playing days, Doyle continued to lead in the world of education and athletics. He became a teacher and served as the varsity Football Coach at Lake Fenton High School, guiding the Blue Devils to six playoff appearances in eight seasons and two GAC Red Division titles. His leadership journey continued in athletic administration as the Athletic Director at Kearsley High School for four years and later at Clio High School, where he helped shape the next generation of Mustang Athletes.
Today, Eric continues his impact as the Middle School Assistant Principal at Clio Middle School bringing his experience, passion, and Mustang pride into every hallway and classroom. Eric is married to Erin Doyle (Clio Class of 1998), a dedicated educator at Goodrich Middle School. Together they are raising their son, Easton, with the same Mustang values that shaped Eric's remarkable journey.

Mike Fitzgerald embodied the spirit of the Clio community through decades of service, leadership, and dedication to Mustang Athletics. A relentless supporter of Clio students and programs, Mike's contributions helped shape the athletic experience for generations of young people.
Mike served as an Assistant Coach for the Varsity Baseball program from 1986 through 1995 under Head Coach Dan Shelton. His commitment and impact on the program were widely recognized, culminating in being named the MHSBCA Assistant Coach of the Year, a testament to his skill, passion for the game, and ability to develop student-athletes.
Beyond baseball, Mike was a fixture on the event staff for Clio Athletics. For more than 20 years, he could be found working the chains at Mustang Football games and supporting crowd control at basketball contests, ensuring that every event ran smoothly and safely. His presence, and his high standards, became a constant and valued part of the athletic experience for players, coaches, officials, and fans alike.
Mike's influence extended to the youth level as well. He was instrumental in the early development of the Clio Little League program, serving both as a coach and a board member during the formative years of the complex. His leadership helped build a foundation that would provide opportunities for thousands of young athletes and strengthen the community's passion for baseball. Very seldom seen at events without his best friend, Ron Green, the two were true ambassadors of the Clio Athletic Program.
Mike passed away in December of 2021, leaving behind a legacy defined by service, kindness, and unwavering support of Clio Athletics. His commitment to community and youth sports continues through his wife, Mary, and his three children: Laurie, Shawn, and Erin, all proud Clio High School graduates.

After earning her bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan in 1969 and a master's degree from Purdue University in 1987, Connie returned to her roots and spent over three decades shaping young minds at Clio High School.
From 1969 to 2000, Connie taught French, Spanish, and English, inspiring generations of students with her passion for kanguage and culture. She served as the Foreign Language Department Chair and sponsored the International Club, coordinated annual student trips to Québec, and Mexico, and was instrumental in welcoming and supporting foreign exchange students. As co-chair of the innovative "Project Mexico," she led students on simulated international experiences that expanded their global awareness right from Clio's classrooms. Her dedication earned her the honor of Clio's nominee for Michigan Teacher of the Year in 1987-1988 and the role of Commencement Speaker in 2000.
Connie's influence extended well beyond her classroom. She was a valued member of Clio High School's Musical Theater production teams and contributed to community arts through Clio cast & Crew and Show to go. Her leadership as a board member of the Clio Amphitheater (1995-2005) helped cultivate a vibrant local arts scene. A recipient of the Triangle of Honor from the International Order of Job's daughters and an active member of the Order of the Eastern Star and Bethany United Methodist Church, Connie consistently demonstrate servant leadership and commitment to her community.
Her passion for education continued at the collegiate level, teaching French and Spanish as an adjunct instructor at the University of Michigan - Flint from 1988 to 2011, where she was also nominated for the Distinguished Professor Award in 2001. She later mentored the next generation of educators as the university's student teacher coordinator from 2003 to 2006.
Recognized in 2011 as the clio Area Educational Foundation's Alumnus of the Year, Connie now enjoys retirement in Florida while remaining an active contributor to her community. She serves as Chair of the Polo Park Resident Directory, co-chairs the annual Holiday Craft Show, plays piano for chapel services, organizes theater outings, and enjoys golfing, bowling, bocce, and continued language study and travel.

After graduation, Schroeder continued her basketball journey at Oakland University and Saginaw Valley State University, averaging more than 14 points per game for the Cardinals. But her connection to the game didn't end when her playing career concluded, it evolved.
Schroeder first picked up a whistle while still a student at Clio, officiating local games. After college, she quickly ascended through the ranks, officiating NCAA Division I contests in the ACC, Big East, and Atlantic-10, along with WNBA and NBA G-League games. In 2019, Schroeder broke barriers by earning a spot as an NBA official, becoming just the sixth woman to work games at the highest level of professional basketball.

A dedicated Little League coach and volunteer, Ron both served on the Clio Little League Board and played a key role in introducing countless young athletes to the game of baseball while instilling values of teamwork, sportsmanship, and commitment. His passion for athletics extended well beyond youth sports, as he also served Clio Athletics as a Clio Athletic Booster member for more than 20 years. Whether working behind the scenes or ensuring events ran smoothly, Ron could always be counted on to be there when clio needed him.
Ron also contributed to the game as a high school baseball umpire, earning respect throughout the area for his fairness, knowledge, and professionalism. His presence on the field reflected the same integrity and care he showed in every role he filled.
A proud Clio supporter through and through, Ron raised a family of Clio athletes and continues to reside in the community with his wife Pat, where he has served as a parishioner and usher at St. Charles and Helena for almost 50 years. He was always willing to lend a hand and consistently supported Clio coaches and athletes with whatever they needed to be successful during their time in the district.

In continuing the introduction of the Clio Area Schools Hall of Fame Class of 2025, Clio Area Schools is proud to recognize an individual whose dedication has made a lasting impact. Congratulations to Gene Hickey, a staff member inductee, whose service and contributions embody Mustang pride.
GENE HICKEY - STAFF MEMBER
Clio Area Schools Hall of Fame- Class of 2025
For over three decades, Gene Hickey served the Clio Area Schools community as an exceptional educator, mentor, and the visionary architect of one of the most successful and enduring extracurricular programs in district history: the Clio Scholastic Chess Program. His leadership, expertise, and unwavering dedication to students helped transform Clio into a statewide, and at times, national chess powerhouse.
Mr Hickey. began coaching Clio chess in 1978, and for the next 35 years, until his retirement in 2013, he built a program that touched the lives of thousands of students. Under his guidance, Clio fielded competitive teams at the the elementary, junior high, and high school levels, competing in the Interscholastic Chess League (ICCL) and in numerous state and national competitions. The program became one of the winningest in Clio history, producing a legacy of excellence that continues today.
During Hickey's coaching career, Clio teams and individuals collected championships, trophies, and honors "too numerous to list," but among the most notable accomplishments:
- Multiple ICCL League championships at both the junior high and high school levels
- Two State Elementary Team Championships
- One State Junior High Team Championship
- High finishes year after year at State and National tournament events
- Numerous individual successes, including:
- Ross Speiran, 2nd place at the National Junior High Championship (St. Paul, MN)
- Samer Sahoury, Clio's only National High School Champion, achieving a perfect 7-0 record (Nashville, TN, 2005)

For over three decades, Gene Hickey served the Clio Area Schools community as an exceptional educator, mentor, and the visionary architect of one of the most successful and enduring extracurricular programs in district history: the Clio Scholastic Chess Program. His leadership, expertise, and unwavering dedication to students helped transform Clio into a statewide, and at times, national chess powerhouse.
Mr Hickey. began coaching Clio chess in 1978, and for the next 35 years, until his retirement in 2013, he built a program that touched the lives of thousands of students. Under his guidance, Clio fielded competitive teams at the the elementary, junior high, and high school levels, competing in the Interscholastic Chess League (ICCL) and in numerous state and national competitions. The program became one of the winningest in Clio history, producing a legacy of excellence that continues today.
During Hickey's coaching career, Clio teams and individuals collected championships, trophies, and honors "too numerous to list," but among the most notable accomplishments:
- Multiple ICCL League championships at both the junior high and high school levels
- Two State Elementary Team Championships
- One State Junior High Team Championship
- High finishes year after year at State and National tournament events
- Numerous individual successes, including:
- Ross Speiran, 2nd place at the National Junior High Championship (St. Paul, MN)
- Samer Sahoury, Clio's only National High School Champion, achieving a perfect 7-0 record (Nashville, TN, 2005)

As today’s announcements for the Clio Area Schools Hall of Fame Class of 2025 come to a close, recognition is given to the first of two teams being inducted this year. This remarkable group of student-athletes represented Clio Area Schools with excellence, sportsmanship, and true Mustang pride.

A remarkable three-sport standout, Christi's career at Clio High School was defined by excellence, versatility, and a relentless competitive spirit. She earned an unprecedented eight First Team All-Big Nine selections, placing her in elite company as one of only three athletes in conference history to achieve First Team All-Conference honors at least twice in basketball, volleyball, and softball.
A four-year letter winner in all three sports, Christi set a standard of sustained success across every season. On the basketball court, she was an All-State performer, finishing her career with 1,062 points and ranking among Clio's most prolific scorers. As a senior, she earned All-State honors while also being named First Team all-Conference during both her junior and senior seasons.
On the softball diamond, Christi was a dominant shortstop and one of the most feared hitters in the Big Nine. She was a two0-time First Team All-State selection and led the conference in 2004 with a remarkable .600 batting average while driving in 13 home runs. Her senior season culminated in additional All-State recognition, further solidifying her place among the elite players in program history.
In volleyball, Christi's leadership and all-around skill earned her multiple First Team All-Conference honors, along with All-Region recognition during her senior year. Her impact extended beyond athletic performance, as she was also a six-time Conference Academic Award recipient, exemplifying excellence in both the classroom and competition.
Following high school, Christi continued her athletic career at St. Clair Community, where she played volleyball and helped lead her team to a National Junior College Athletic Association Division II National Championship. She paced her college team with 406 digs and an outstanding .954 serving percentage. That championship team was later inducted into the Port Huron Sports Hall of Fame.
In recognition of her extraordinary accomplishments at Clio High School, Christi Clemens was also inducted into the Greater Flint Area Sports Hall of Fame. Today, she continues to give back to the game and the classroom as a fifth-grade teacher, basketball coach, and devoted mother of two. Christi Clemens's legacy as a trailblazer, champion, and role model makes her a truly deserving inductee into the Clio Area Schools Hall of Fame.

Carrie Ammons has devoted her life to Clio area Schools as a student, educator, administrator, parent, and community leader. A 1989 graduate of clio High school, she was actively involved in student Council and the National Honor Society, served as a wrestling manager, and worked in both the guidance and principal's offices. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from Michigan Technological University in 1993 and began her career with Clio area Schools as a Title I reading aide and science resource specialist. She returned to Michigan Tech to earn her teaching certificate in 1995 and later completed a Master's degree in Educational Leadership from saginaw Valley State University. and an Education Specialist Degree from Oakland University.
From 1995 to 2009, Carrie taught mathematics and science at Clio High School, including Algebra, Calculus, Chemistry, Physics, and Earth Science. She founded the Science Expo Program, providing elementary students with hands-on science instruction taught by high school mentors. As longtime coach of Clio's Science Olympiad team, she led the program to 11 consecutive state qualifications with two-top 10 finishes and helped establish Michigan's first science Olympiad Invitational tournament. She also shared her expertise through professional development, state conference presentations, and service on the Michigan Science Olympiad State Board and the National Mole Day Foundation Board.
Ammons began her administrative career in 2009 as Assistant Principal and Curriculum Supervisor at Clio Middle School and later served as Assistant Principal at Clio High School from 2010 to 2017, where she focused on improving student behavior, attendance, and academic achievement, while overseeing scheduling and data coordination.
She has served on the Clio Area Schools Board of Education since 2020 and has been a member of the Clio Area Educational Foundation since 2007, currently serving as President. Her leadership has supported teacher mini-grants, student scholarships, and the Excellence in Education recognition program. Her community service includes leadership with the Clio Chamber of Commerce, the Vienna Township Business Development Authority, and "100 People Who Care in Clio," as well as involvement with the Community Bond COmmittee, Band Boosters, PTA, and Summer Kick-Off planning. Through her work as an Associate Broker with RE/MAX Right Choice, she has organized and supported numerous school and community events.
Carrie and her family hosted 14 international exchange students and were long-tim volunteers with Youth for Understanding. Her children , Alex (2019), Sydney (2020), and Ben (2022), are Clio graduates. Following the loss of her son Alex in 2022, she helped lead a $15,000 donation to the Mustang Marching Band and established an annual student award in his memory. Carrie Ammons' lifelong commitment to education, service, and community exemplifies the highest ideals of Mustang Pride.
